After School Programs
About Our After School Programs
Girls Inc. of York Region offers engaging After School Programs at various locations throughout the school year. These programs are supported by funding from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport (MTCS) and the United Way of Toronto York Region, enabling us to provide quality activities for children and youth in priority neighborhoods.
Empowering Youth Through Active Participation
Our After School Programs focus on encouraging children and youth to stay active, develop healthy eating habits, boost their confidence, and excel in school. By addressing these key areas, we aim to combat childhood obesity and youth violence. Each year, we provide children and youth with the opportunity to engage in fun, safe, and supervised activities that they might not otherwise experience.
Tailored Programs for Girls
We recognize the unique needs of girls and tailor our programming accordingly. Activities include:
- Cultural Experiences: Engaging in traditional recipes, Aboriginal drumming and dancing
- Homework Help: Providing academic support to enhance learning
- Creative Arts: Encouraging musical expression and participation in researched-based identity programs
Our physical activity component includes structured activities like basketball, dancing, and soccer, as well as unstructured playtime. In addition, our healthy eating initiatives teach girls about nutrition and cooking, focusing on fruits and vegetables. Girls have the chance to prepare healthy after-school snacks, such as fruit smoothies and wraps.
Building Self-Esteem and Resilience
Our health and wellness programs are designed to foster self-esteem, resilience, and confidence. We emphasize anti-bullying awareness and promote positive relationships among peers.
Physical Literacy Development
Our programs also incorporate physical literacy, which helps girls move confidently and competently in various environments. By breaking down fundamental movement skills into manageable components, we enable girls to build their confidence and competence in physical activity. This foundation allows them to develop more complex sport-specific skills and fosters a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.
Confidence in physical literacy encourages girls to take safe risks, explore new activities, and step outside their comfort zones. Mastering these skills positively impacts their academic performance, family relationships, and ability to make informed life choices, reducing susceptibility to peer pressure.
