Community Partners

Partnerships with businesses provide Girls Inc. and our members with invaluable opportunities.  These collaborations allow Girls Inc. of York Region to deliver quality programming and provide new opportunities to our girls and their families.

Why get involved?
Community partnerships demonstrate the importance for businesses to get involved in the non-profit sector.  Their partnerships take on many forms; each as important as the next.  It is because of these partnerships that Girls Inc. of York Region can increase our client base and support our community further.

We show our partners our gratitude and appreciation using our Social Media Platforms, Website and we create brand awareness with our members and their families, including distributing promotional material where possible.

Grassroots Sailing

Girls Inc. of York Region and Grassroots Sailing teamed up in July 2014 to introduce sailing to youth girls 12-14 years old. The girls participated in a 2-week intensive program, where they learned not only how to sail but also worked extremely hard to gain knowledge about sailing.  Many thanks go out to Lefroy Harbour- Kon Tiki Marina for letting us use their facility, without them none of this would have been possible. This was a once in a lifetime experience for Girls Inc. and the girls will be forever grateful.  Grassroots sailing is owned by Rick Butler, who has been amazingly supportive of the girls getting into the sailing culture. This partnership has continued into our after school programs and our 2015 summer camps.

Foxwood Farm
http://www.foxwoodfarm.ca/

In 2012 Girls Inc. was introduced to a wonderful woman, Robyn Freer who owns/operates Foxwood Farm.  Our partnership started off with a few one day workshops and grew to two full weeks of riding camp in the summer of 2013.  Both the workshops and camps gave the opportunity to many girls who would never have the chance to be around horses.  It was amazing for staff to watch how they interacted with the ponies/horses: at first, a bit timid not knowing how the animal would react to them.  As they became more comfortable, just by grooming and being around the horses, many of the quiet girls began to talk more, not only amongst themselves but to their assigned horse or pony.  The real excitement was watching them ride, many for the first time and to see the smiles on their faces!

In September 2013, the Girls Inc.  Equine Sponsorship Program at Foxwood Farm was created.  Eight girls were selected by Girls Inc. to participate in 2 – 6 month sessions: riding weekly in a lesson and also, caring for “their” horse – grooming, blanketing, farrier and veterinarian care, etc. To help assist with the program funding, Foxwood has allowed us to host fundraising pizza and bake sales at some of the Foxwood schooling shows, Yard Sales, and sell raffle tickets.  Due to Roybn’s willingness to partner and work with the girls, the Equine Sponsorship Program is now into its second year running and the changes we have seen in the girls is astronomical.
